Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay began to develop her creative and artistic side when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. The aunt was on in the evening shifts as a nursing assistant so she could follow her passion of theater and literature in the daytime. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective tool for promoting social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was conscious of her social status and influenced her to say something through the arts. DuVernay was brought up in Compton by her parents, however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is the place where her father's family has been for generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma inspire her later to make a film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay completed Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she received qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was still at university. Her career began as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to look-out and search for the house of a particular juror. When she was dissatisfied with journalism by the tasks she was given she decided to pursue an interest in public relations. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant in a tiny film studio, right after graduating from the college. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. The company launched a number of promotions and lifestyle channels that include Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
